Prayagraj/Dehradun: Torrential monsoon rain disrupted normal life across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday, August 18, with severe waterlogging reported in Prayagraj and widespread road blockages affecting Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand.

In Prayagraj, all schools were ordered to remain closed on August 18 as heavy rain caused extensive waterlogging across the city. Low-lying areas were inundated, while traffic movement and daily activities were severely affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall in parts of Uttar Pradesh, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

Prayagraj recorded around 73 mm of rainfall, the highest of the season so far, according to reports. The intense downpour not only flooded several parts of the city but also contributed to rising water levels in nearby rivers, increasing concerns in vulnerable areas. Civic authorities have been monitoring the situation and working to clear accumulated water.

The situation was also difficult in Dehradun, where heavy rain continued through Tuesday and disrupted transportation and everyday activities. Authorities closed all schools from Classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres in the district as a precautionary measure.

Rain-triggered landslides and debris have affected road connectivity across Uttarakhand. Around 97 roads remained blocked in the state, with agencies working to clear the affected stretches and restore movement. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall was issued for the mountainous districts of the Garhwal region.

Continuous rain also pushed up water levels in rivers and streams around Dehradun, including the Tamsa River near the Tapkeshwar area. Authorities urged residents, tourists and pilgrims to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and other water bodies where water levels can rise rapidly.

The IMD has forecast continued rainfall across Uttarakhand until August 21, raising concerns over further waterlogging, landslides and road disruptions. Authorities are closely monitoring vulnerable locations and advising people to follow official weather updates.

The latest spell of intense rainfall highlights the continuing impact of an active monsoon across northern India, with local administrations in affected areas focusing on public safety, road clearance and emergency preparedness.
