Guwahati, Assam: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past several hours has caused severe waterlogging across multiple parts of Guwahati, leading to widespread disruption of normal life in Assam’s largest city. Several low-lying areas were inundated, roads turned into waterlogged stretches, and daily commuting was badly affected as vehicles moved at a slow pace or got stuck in flooded streets.

According to local reports, the downpour began early in the morning and intensified through the day, overwhelming the city’s drainage system. Key localities, including residential neighbourhoods, market areas, and arterial roads, witnessed knee-deep to waist-deep water in some places. Commuters faced major difficulties as public transport services were delayed and traffic congestion built up across major junctions.

In view of the worsening weather conditions and safety concerns, authorities announced the closure of schools in Guwahati for the day. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, especially as several school routes were reported to be waterlogged and difficult to navigate.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority and municipal teams have been deployed in affected areas to assist with drainage operations and manage traffic flow. Pumps were used in certain critical zones to reduce water accumulation, but continuous rainfall slowed down relief efforts.

Residents in several parts reported water entering homes and shops, causing inconvenience and minor property damage. Shopkeepers in affected markets had to shut down early as access roads became impassable. Office commuters also faced delays, with many opting to return home or work remotely due to the situation.

Meteorological officials have indicated that the heavy rainfall is part of an active monsoon spell affecting parts of Northeast India. More showers have been forecast in the coming hours, raising concerns about continued waterlogging and disruption if rainfall persists.

Local authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas, and follow official advisories. Emergency response teams remain on alert to address any further escalation in flood-like conditions.

Guwahati, which frequently faces urban flooding during intense monsoon spells, has once again highlighted the challenges of drainage infrastructure under extreme rainfall conditions. As the weather situation develops, officials are closely monitoring vulnerable zones and coordinating relief measures to minimise public inconvenience.
