Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Friday claimed that the high voter turnout in the West Bengal Assembly elections indicates a clear political shift in the state, asserting that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is on the “back foot” ahead of counting.
Speaking to the media, Ghosh said that increased participation of voters reflects a growing desire for change among the electorate. “High turnout always goes against the ruling party. People have come out in large numbers because they want change. TMC is on the back foot,” he remarked.
The BJP leader further alleged that despite attempts to influence voters, people exercised their franchise freely and in large numbers. He also credited central forces for ensuring relatively peaceful polling in several constituencies, claiming that their presence gave voters the confidence to step out and vote without fear.
The comments come at a time when political tensions remain high in West Bengal, with both the BJP and the TMC engaged in a war of words over allegations of electoral irregularities, strong room security, and handling of voting materials. The atmosphere has been particularly charged in the run-up to vote counting, with protests and counter-allegations from both sides.
The TMC, however, rejected Ghosh’s claims, maintaining that high voter turnout does not necessarily indicate an anti-incumbency wave. Party leaders argued that increased participation could also reflect support for the ruling government’s welfare schemes and grassroots connect. They expressed confidence that the results would be in their favour.
Political analysts note that voter turnout can have varying interpretations depending on the context, and it does not always translate into a clear electoral outcome. In a state like West Bengal, where elections are intensely competitive, both major parties often project turnout figures to suit their political narratives.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has stated that polling across the state was conducted under strict security arrangements, with multiple phases completed amid tight vigilance. Authorities have urged all stakeholders to maintain calm as the state awaits the results.
With counting day approaching, both parties continue to make strong claims, but the final verdict will ultimately depend on how the votes translate into seats across the state.
