At least eight people were killed in a tragic road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district after a vehicle lost control and plunged into a deep gorge on a hilly stretch of road. The incident occurred on Saturday, sending shockwaves through nearby villages as rescue teams rushed to the remote site.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was travelling on a narrow mountain road when the driver reportedly lost control, causing it to veer off the edge and fall several hundred feet into the gorge. The impact of the crash left the vehicle badly mangled, making rescue operations extremely difficult due to the steep and rugged terrain.
Locals were among the first to reach the accident spot after hearing the sound of the crash. They immediately informed the police and district administration. Soon after, teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local rescue units were deployed to carry out search and recovery operations.
Officials confirmed that all eight occupants of the vehicle died on the spot due to the severity of the impact. The bodies were later recovered after a challenging operation involving ropes and manual assistance, as heavy machinery could not be used in the narrow mountainous area.
The identities of the victims are being verified, and authorities are in the process of informing their families. Initial suspicion suggests that overspeeding or a possible mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
Local administration officials have expressed grief over the incident and assured that a detailed probe will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the crash. Compensation for the families of the deceased is also expected to be announced as per government norms.
Road accidents in Himachal Pradesh’s hilly regions are not uncommon, especially on sharp bends and poorly lit stretches where visibility and road width are limited. Authorities have once again urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while travelling through mountain routes, particularly during nighttime or adverse weather conditions.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Chamba district, with residents mourning the loss of lives and calling for improved road safety measures in the region.
