New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread rainfall alert for the next 24 hours, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, with Odisha expected to receive isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall. The alert comes as an active monsoon system continues to influence weather conditions over eastern and central India.
According to the IMD, Odisha is likely to bear the brunt of the current weather system, with some districts expected to witness extremely heavy rainfall that could lead to waterlogging, flash floods in low-lying areas, and disruptions to transport and daily life. Authorities have been advised to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures in vulnerable regions.
Apart from Odisha, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also forecast over parts of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and several north eastern states. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely in many areas, prompting the weather department to urge residents to stay indoors during severe weather conditions whenever possible.
The IMD has warned that intense rainfall may trigger localized flooding, landslides in hilly regions, and a rise in river water levels. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along affected coastal areas due to rough weather and strong winds. Commuters have also been urged to plan travel carefully, as heavy rain could disrupt road, rail, and air services in some regions.
State disaster management authorities and local administrations have been asked to remain prepared for emergency response operations. Rescue teams and relief agencies have been put on alert in areas expected to experience the heaviest rainfall, while residents in flood-prone locations have been advised to follow official weather updates and evacuation instructions if required.
