The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds as monsoon conditions continue to intensify across the state.
According to the latest forecast, the yellow alert has been declared for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts. Officials have cautioned that isolated heavy rainfall is likely in these regions over the next 24 hours, along with lightning and strong surface winds.
The IMD defines a yellow alert as a “be aware” warning, indicating the possibility of heavy rain ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in a day. Meteorologists have advised residents to remain alert and take precautions, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The weather office said that conditions are becoming favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over Kerala and adjoining regions. As a result, widespread showers and thundershowers are expected to continue in several parts of the state over the coming days. Authorities have also warned of possible disruptions to traffic, waterlogging in urban areas, and temporary power interruptions due to lightning activity.
Disaster management teams in Kerala have been instructed to stay on standby, while local administrations have been advised to monitor river levels and ensure preparedness in case of rising water in vulnerable areas. Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions along the coast.
Over the past few days, Kerala has been witnessing intermittent heavy rainfall linked to pre-monsoon and early monsoon activity. The IMD has indicated that such weather patterns are likely to continue as the monsoon system strengthens further over the Indian subcontinent.
Authorities have urged the public to follow official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain. With the alert in place, officials are closely monitoring the situation to respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies across the affected districts.
