Opposition parties under the INDIA Alliance have decided to boycott the upcoming election for the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha scheduled for April 17, according to sources.
The decision comes amid growing political tension between the opposition and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over parliamentary procedures and consultation processes. The INDIA bloc parties have alleged that the government did not hold adequate discussions with opposition leaders before finalising the electoral process for the key parliamentary post.
Congress leaders and other opposition MPs have argued that the move reflects a pattern of ignoring parliamentary conventions. They also raised concerns over what they described as an “unprecedented situation” in which the NDA candidate for Deputy Chairman is closely linked to recent Rajya Sabha nominations, further intensifying political disagreements.
Opposition leaders stated that the boycott is not aimed at any individual candidate but is intended as a protest against what they call the weakening of democratic norms inside Parliament. They have maintained that their decision is a collective stand to highlight procedural concerns and the need for greater consultation in the functioning of the Upper House.
The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is a crucial constitutional position, responsible for presiding over the House in the absence of the Chairman and ensuring smooth conduct of legislative business. The post holds significant importance in maintaining parliamentary discipline and facilitating debate between ruling and opposition members.
Meanwhile, the ruling alliance has dismissed the opposition’s allegations, asserting that the election process is being conducted as per established rules. NDA leaders have also maintained that the opposition is avoiding participation due to political inconvenience rather than procedural issues.
The boycott adds another layer of confrontation between the two sides during the ongoing parliamentary session, which has already seen sharp exchanges over several legislative matters. Political observers say the development could further deepen the divide between the government and opposition ahead of key policy discussions in Parliament.
With both sides standing firm, the Deputy Chairman election is expected to proceed amid a politically charged atmosphere, reflecting the continuing friction between the NDA and INDIA bloc inside the Rajya Sabha.
