India and Cyprus on Friday elevated their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi. The announcement marks a significant step forward in strengthening political, economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking after the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said the decision to upgrade ties would “infuse relations with new momentum,” adding that the partnership would open fresh opportunities for collaboration in key sectors such as trade, investment, shipping, infrastructure, defence cooperation and technology.
According to official statements, both leaders discussed ways to deepen engagement in areas of mutual interest, including expanding economic linkages, enhancing maritime cooperation, and boosting connectivity between India and Europe through Cyprus, which is geographically positioned as an important gateway to the European Union.
The two sides also agreed to establish new mechanisms to support the implementation of joint initiatives and to ensure regular monitoring of progress under the upgraded partnership framework. Officials indicated that a joint task force may be set up to further facilitate cooperation in strategic and economic sectors.
The discussions also covered regional and global issues, including ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, stability and a rules-based international order. India also reiterated its support for peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
The elevation of ties comes at a time when India is expanding its engagement with European partners and strengthening its global strategic footprint. Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has increasingly been viewed as an important partner for India in areas such as trade corridors, maritime security and investment flows.
President Christodoulides welcomed the new phase in bilateral relations, stating that the Strategic Partnership would help unlock untapped potential and bring greater economic and strategic convergence between the two nations.
The meeting is being seen as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach to deepen partnerships with countries in Europe and the Mediterranean region, with both sides expressing optimism that the upgraded ties will lead to more structured and result-oriented cooperation in the coming years.
