The Haryana government has temporarily suspended mobile internet services, bulk SMS services, and dongle-based internet connections in parts of Faridabad on May 30 as a precautionary measure ahead of a major demolition drive in the city’s NIT (New Industrial Township) Zone. The decision was taken to maintain public order and prevent the spread of rumours or misinformation during the operation.
According to an order issued by the Haryana Home Affairs Department, the suspension covers mobile internet services across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks within a one-kilometre radius of the notified location in the NIT Zone. The restrictions came into effect at 12:30 am and will remain in force until 10 pm on May 30.
Officials said the move was based on inputs from the Additional Director General of Police (CID) and the Faridabad district administration, who expressed concerns that the demolition drive could lead to tension, protests, or disturbances. Authorities feared that social media platforms and messaging services could be used to spread false information, mobilise crowds, or trigger unrest in the area.
The government clarified that voice calling services have not been suspended. Banking-related SMS alerts, mobile recharge messages, broadband internet connections, and leased-line services for homes and businesses will also continue to function normally. The restrictions are limited only to mobile internet, bulk messaging, and dongle services operating within the designated zone.
Reports said the demolition drive is linked to land clearance activities in the NIT area, including structures falling within the route of a planned infrastructure project. Heavy security deployment has been arranged around the site, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the operation proceeds without any major disruption.
The Haryana government stated that the temporary suspension has been imposed under provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024. Officials stressed that the measure is preventive in nature and aimed solely at maintaining peace, protecting public property, and avoiding any law-and-order issues during the demolition process.
