Jabalpur: The search and rescue operation in the tragic cruise boat accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district has been officially concluded, with authorities confirming that the death toll has risen to 13. The incident, which occurred on a river stretch near a popular tourist spot, has left the region in shock and mourning.

According to officials, the overcrowded cruise boat capsized during a routine trip, leading to chaos as several passengers were thrown into the water. Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local authorities, were immediately deployed to the site and carried out an extensive search operation over the past few days.

District administration sources confirmed that all missing persons have now been accounted for, prompting the decision to call off the search operation. Bodies recovered during the operation have been handed over to families after identification, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest that negligence and possible overloading may have contributed to the accident. Officials are also examining whether proper safety protocols, including the availability of life jackets and adherence to passenger limits, were followed by the boat operators.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased. He also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident to determine accountability and ensure strict action against those responsible.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the boat suddenly tilted and overturned, giving passengers little time to react. Many struggled to stay afloat, while local residents and fishermen joined rescue efforts even before official teams arrived.

The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about safety standards in inland water tourism across the state. Authorities have indicated that stricter guidelines and enforcement measures will be introduced to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, the focus now shifts to ensuring justice for the victims and implementing stronger safeguards to avoid a repeat of such a devastating accident.
