Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government over the state of the Indian economy, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “busy distributing toffees” and making “pious pleas” to the public instead of addressing serious economic concerns.
Ramesh’s remarks came amid the ongoing political debate over inflation, fuel prices, unemployment and the broader economic situation in the country. The Congress leader claimed that the Centre was attempting to divert attention from what he described as worsening ground realities faced by ordinary citizens.
Taking a swipe at the Prime Minister’s recent public appeals for austerity and reduced fuel consumption, Ramesh alleged that such statements indicated deeper economic stress than what official data suggests. He argued that the government’s “propaganda” was disconnected from the everyday struggles of people dealing with rising household expenses and stagnant incomes.
According to reports, the Congress leader also warned that tougher economic measures, including possible fuel price hikes and stricter spending controls, could be on the horizon. He accused the government of preparing the public psychologically for difficult decisions instead of taking proactive steps to shield citizens from economic pressure.
The BJP has not officially responded to Ramesh’s latest comments yet. However, the ruling party has repeatedly defended the government’s economic management, highlighting India’s GDP growth, infrastructure expansion and welfare schemes under the Modi administration. BJP leaders have also maintained that global geopolitical tensions, including the West Asia crisis and disruptions in energy markets, have affected economies worldwide.
The Congress has intensified its criticism of the Centre in recent weeks, particularly over inflation, unemployment and foreign policy challenges. Opposition leaders have been accusing the government of prioritising image-building exercises over economic relief measures.
Ramesh’s comments have once again triggered a political war of words between the Congress and the BJP, with both parties expected to continue targeting each other aggressively as the political atmosphere heats up ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
