Ranchi: The ongoing student agitation in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations has intensified, with protesters accusing the state administration of trying to weaken and divide the movement instead of addressing their core demands.

Student leader Ravindra Paswan alleged that the government was attempting to fragment the protest by engaging with multiple organisations separately and accepting memoranda from groups that were not part of the main agitation. He claimed that such moves could create divisions among protesting students and dilute their demands.

The protest, which began on July 25, is centred on allegations of irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Students have demanded the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services examination, an independent probe, including a CBI investigation, and wider reforms to make the recruitment process more transparent.

The issue has also become a major concern because of the health of students participating in indefinite hunger strikes. Protester Prem Nayak claimed that several fasting students were in a weak condition and alleged that officials were attempting to persuade or remove hunger-striking leaders from the protest site. He said such actions could weaken the agitation. The allegations have not been independently established.

The government, meanwhile, has maintained that it is willing to engage with the protesters. Two rounds of talks have already taken place, but neither has produced a breakthrough. During the latest meeting, an eight-member student delegation presented its demands to government representatives, who said the issues would be taken up with Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The students, however, said they would not withdraw their agitation until concrete decisions were taken.

The dispute follows the announcement of the 14th JPSC preliminary examination results. The commission shortlisted 2,204 candidates for 103 vacancies from around 3.5 lakh applicants, after which allegations of irregularities emerged. The state government has said that action has already been taken in connection with the allegations, with 19 people arrested, but protesters continue to demand wider accountability.

With the deadlock continuing, student groups have announced plans for a march towards the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10. Protest leaders say the demonstration will be aimed at pressing the government to accept their demands, while authorities face the challenge of preventing tensions from escalating.

For now, the central question remains whether further dialogue can bridge the growing gap between the government and protesting students, or whether the agitation will enter a more confrontational phase.
