The sacred portals of Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand were officially opened for devotees on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the much-awaited Char Dham Yatra 2026. The temple gates were opened at around 8:00 AM after remaining closed for nearly six months during the harsh winter season.
Situated at an altitude of about 3,583 metres in the Himalayas, Kedarnath Temple remains inaccessible during winter due to extreme weather and heavy snowfall. Every year, the shrine is ceremonially reopened in April or May following traditional rituals decided on Mahashivratri.
This year’s reopening comes against the backdrop of fresh snowfall that has blanketed the Kedarnath valley, turning the entire region into a picturesque white landscape. Reports indicate that the area has been covered with several feet of snow in recent days, posing challenges for authorities in completing last-minute preparations.
Despite the weather conditions, thousands of devotees from across India and abroad gathered at the shrine to witness the auspicious opening ceremony. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was also expected to attend the event, highlighting its spiritual and cultural significance.
The reopening of Kedarnath also signals the formal progression of the Char Dham Yatra, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimages. While Yamunotri and Gangotri temples opened earlier on April 19, the Badrinath temple is scheduled to open on April 23, completing the circuit.
Authorities have implemented several measures to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage this year. Mandatory registration for pilgrims, improved monitoring systems, and updated travel guidelines have been introduced. Facilities such as helicopter services and better route management are also in place to handle the expected surge in visitors.
The heavy snowfall, while creating logistical hurdles, has added to the spiritual charm of the shrine. Visuals of the snow-covered temple have gone viral, drawing attention from pilgrims and tourists alike.
As the doors open, Kedarnath once again becomes a focal point of faith, devotion, and resilience, welcoming thousands who brave both terrain and weather in their spiritual journey.
