Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal has thanked the people of Punjab after the party recorded a sweeping victory in the state’s urban civic body elections, strengthening its position ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
As counting concluded across municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats, AAP emerged as the dominant force in most urban areas of the state. The party secured a large majority of wards and performed strongly in key cities including Mohali, Bathinda, Barnala, Moga and Batala. Several reports described the result as one of AAP’s biggest victories in Punjab’s urban local body elections.
Reacting to the outcome, Kejriwal expressed gratitude to voters and said the results reflected public support for the work carried out by the government led by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In a message posted on social media, he called the victory “historic” and said people had endorsed the government’s governance and development agenda.
Kejriwal also used the occasion to launch a fresh attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), referring to it as the “ED party” in an apparent reference to the Enforcement Directorate. He alleged that traders and business owners in Punjab had been harassed through central agency actions and claimed that voters had responded through the ballot box.
AAP leaders described the civic poll results as a strong endorsement of the party’s governance model. Senior leader Manish Sisodia said the verdict showed that people preferred “politics of work” over what he called politics driven by fear and pressure.
The elections were held across more than 100 urban local bodies in Punjab, with over 7,500 candidates contesting. Political observers viewed the polls as an important test for all major parties before the next Assembly election. While AAP dominated most regions, the Congress managed to retain influence in a few pockets, including Kapurthala, while the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal secured limited gains in selected areas.
The civic poll sweep is expected to boost AAP’s confidence in Punjab and further strengthen the party’s urban support base. Party leaders said the results demonstrate that voters continue to back the Mann government and its policies despite sustained attacks from opposition parties.
