Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for a “self-lockdown” across the state in response to an intense heatwave, urging people to remain indoors during peak daytime hours and avoid unnecessary travel.
The advisory comes as temperatures in several parts of Kerala have risen sharply, with weather agencies issuing warnings about extreme heat and humidity. The Chief Minister stressed that the measure is precautionary, aimed at protecting public health rather than enforcing any formal restrictions.
Vijayan appealed to citizens, especially the elderly, children and those with pre-existing health conditions, to limit outdoor activities between late morning and afternoon when heat levels are at their highest. He also advised schools, workplaces and local bodies to adjust schedules where possible to reduce exposure.
State authorities have stepped up preparedness, with hospitals put on alert to handle cases of heatstroke and dehydration. Emergency response systems are being strengthened, and local administrations have been asked to ensure availability of drinking water in public places. Special attention is being given to vulnerable communities, including daily wage workers and those without adequate shelter.
The Chief Minister also urged employers to adopt flexible working hours and provide adequate rest breaks and hydration for outdoor workers. Public awareness campaigns are being intensified to educate people about symptoms of heat-related illnesses and the importance of staying hydrated.
The heatwave has been attributed to a combination of high temperatures and humidity, which increases the risk of heat stress. Officials warned that even short exposure to such conditions could lead to serious health complications if precautions are not taken.
While the situation is being closely monitored, Vijayan emphasised that community cooperation is crucial. He said that voluntary compliance with the “self-lockdown” advisory would significantly reduce health risks and help the state manage the crisis effectively.
Authorities are expected to review the situation regularly and issue further guidelines depending on weather conditions in the coming days.
