Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh has claimed that the party will present evidence to establish whether those involved in the alleged attack on party national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district had any connection with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking on the incident that took place during Banerjee’s visit to Sonarpur, Ghosh said the party is collecting details and will make public “proof” regarding the identity and political affiliation of those who were allegedly part of the crowd that manhandled the TMC leader. He added that the truth would emerge once investigations and internal verification are completed.
Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly “roughed up” during his interaction with families of victims of post-poll violence. He later complained of pain in his neck and back and was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata, where doctors confirmed that his injuries were superficial. He remained under observation for a short period before being discharged from intensive monitoring.
The TMC has raised serious concerns over security arrangements during the visit, alleging that there was a lapse in protection despite the sensitivity of the area. Party leaders have demanded accountability and a detailed inquiry into the incident.
However, opposition parties have denied any involvement and rejected allegations linking them to the incident, calling the claims politically motivated. Police have already initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage, eyewitness statements, and other evidence to determine what exactly triggered the altercation.
Hospital authorities have maintained that Abhishek Banerjee is stable and did not suffer any major injuries, reiterating that his condition was not serious at any point during treatment.
The incident has sparked a wider political confrontation in West Bengal, with rival parties exchanging sharp accusations. As the investigation continues, both political and administrative scrutiny is expected to intensify in the coming days.
