Three people were killed and several others were injured after lightning struck different parts of Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district amid bad weather.
According to local reports, the incidents took place during rain and thunderstorms when victims were either working in fields or caught outdoors. In one case, lightning struck people working in a field, leaving two women dead and several others injured. Another person died in a separate lightning strike in the Bhimpura area. Injured people were taken to nearby government hospitals for treatment.
The incident has created panic in the affected villages, especially as eastern Uttar Pradesh continues to face monsoon-related weather risks. Ballia lies in the easternmost part of Uttar Pradesh and shares boundaries with Bihar, making it vulnerable to changing weather patterns during the rainy season.
Authorities are expected to provide relief as per disaster compensation norms. In earlier lightning-related deaths in Uttar Pradesh, the state government had directed officials to provide financial assistance to victims’ families and ensure proper treatment for the injured.
The tragedy once again highlights the danger of lightning during the monsoon. People have been advised to avoid open fields, trees, water bodies and metal objects during thunderstorms, and to move indoors as soon as weather conditions worsen.
