The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed fresh disruptions on Wednesday as the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM after Opposition members created an uproar over the alleged firing by security forces during the July 20 student protest in New Delhi. The continued deadlock has once again stalled normal legislative business, with both the government and the Opposition refusing to soften their respective positions.

As soon as the House assembled, Opposition MPs demanded an immediate discussion on the police action during the student demonstration and sought a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They alleged that excessive force, including the reported use of pellet guns, was used against protesters during the march to Parliament on July 20. Amid loud sloganeering, Speaker Om Birla repeatedly appealed to members to allow Question Hour to continue and assured them that the scheduled discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, would be taken up later in the day. However, with protests continuing, he adjourned the House till 2 PM.

The controversy stems from nationwide student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and the police response during the July 20 march organised by student groups. Opposition parties have accused the Centre of suppressing peaceful demonstrations and have demanded accountability for those responsible for the alleged use of force. They have also continued to press for a detailed discussion on the issue inside Parliament.

The government, on the other hand, has urged the Opposition to participate in debates instead of disrupting proceedings. It has maintained that Parliament should discuss the proposed anti-paper leak legislation, which seeks stricter punishments, including up to 10 years of imprisonment and hefty fines for examination-related malpractices. Ministers have argued that the Bill is intended to strengthen the integrity of public examinations and address students' concerns.

The repeated adjournments have significantly affected the functioning of the Monsoon Session, with several important legislative items awaiting discussion. While the government remains focused on pushing key Bills, the Opposition has made it clear that it will continue raising the student protest issue until its demands for accountability and an official statement are addressed.

With the House scheduled to reconvene at 2 PM, all eyes remain on whether Parliament can move beyond the ongoing confrontation or whether another day of disruptions will further delay legislative business.
