West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to “forcefully rig” the ongoing elections, claiming incidents of violence and intimidation during the second phase of polling in the state.
Speaking to reporters and through social media remarks, Banerjee accused the opposition party of creating disturbances in several constituencies to influence voters and disrupt the polling process. She said that there were reports of intimidation near polling stations and alleged attempts to create an atmosphere of fear.
“BJP wants to forcefully rig the election by using violence and pressure tactics,” Banerjee reportedly said, adding that democratic rights of voters must be protected at all costs. She also urged election authorities and security forces to act strictly and ensure free and fair polling.
The allegations come amid the second phase of voting in West Bengal, where an initial voter turnout of 18.39 percent was recorded until 9 am. Polling is underway across multiple constituencies under tight security arrangements, with central forces deployed at sensitive booths and surveillance systems activated in several areas.
Election officials have stated that voting has been largely peaceful in most locations, although isolated incidents of tension and complaints from political parties have been reported. Security personnel have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, have denied the allegations made by the Chief Minister, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated.” They have instead accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of trying to influence voters and control ground-level polling processes.
The Election Commission is monitoring the situation closely and has sought reports from district officials regarding any complaints of violence or irregularities. Authorities have also increased patrolling in sensitive zones and are using webcasting in select polling stations to ensure transparency.
West Bengal elections have historically been marked by intense political competition and frequent allegations of poll-related violence from both sides. As voting continues in the second phase, officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral process.
Further updates on voter turnout and any reported incidents are expected as polling progresses throughout the day.
