West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has raised serious concerns over both security arrangements and medical treatment following the alleged attack on party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas district. The incident took place during his visit to Sonarpur, where he had gone to meet the family of a party worker who was reportedly killed in post-poll violence.
Soon after the incident, Abhishek Banerjee was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata after complaining of pain in his neck and back. While initial reports suggested concern, doctors later clarified that his injuries were superficial and not serious, and he was kept under observation as a precaution. Medical officials confirmed that he remained conscious and stable throughout treatment.
However, Mamata Banerjee strongly questioned the handling of the situation, alleging lapses in security during the visit. She claimed that adequate protection was not provided despite the sensitivity of the area and the political context. Speaking to reporters and party workers, she suggested that the attack could have been prevented if proper arrangements had been in place.

Hospital authorities, however, maintained that Abhishek Banerjee received appropriate medical care and was examined thoroughly by specialists. Doctors reiterated that there were no serious internal injuries and that his condition remained stable throughout his stay.
The incident has sparked a wider political debate in West Bengal, with TMC leaders calling it a security failure and demanding accountability from local authorities. Opposition parties have denied involvement and countered the allegations, calling them politically motivated.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee is reported to be recovering well and is expected to resume routine activities soon after medical advice. The state administration is yet to announce a formal inquiry into the incident, though discussions are underway regarding security protocols for high-profile political visits.
