The Mizoram government has announced a series of fuel-saving measures, including a weekly “No Official Vehicle Day” and a work-from-home policy for 20 percent of government employees, amid concerns over fuel conservation and rising transportation costs in the state.
According to officials, the new measures will come into effect from next week and are aimed at reducing fuel consumption in government departments. Under the initiative, government officials and employees will avoid using official vehicles every Wednesday unless required for emergency or essential services.
The state government also decided that around 20 percent of employees in various departments would be allowed to work from home on a rotational basis. Authorities believe the move will help reduce daily commuting, cut fuel expenses and ease traffic congestion in Aizawl and other urban areas.
Officials said departments providing emergency services, healthcare, law enforcement and disaster management would remain exempt from the restrictions to ensure that public services are not affected.
The decision was reportedly taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, where the government discussed ways to manage fuel usage more efficiently. Mizoram, being a hilly state with limited transport connectivity, depends heavily on fuel supplies transported from outside the region, making conservation an important concern for the administration.
Government sources said departments have also been asked to minimise unnecessary travel, encourage virtual meetings and ensure proper monitoring of official vehicle use. Authorities added that employees working from home would continue to remain accountable for their assigned duties and productivity.
The state administration believes the initiative could help significantly reduce government expenditure on fuel if implemented successfully over the long term. Officials also described the move as environmentally responsible, as lower vehicle usage would help reduce carbon emissions and pollution levels.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from residents and employees. While many welcomed the effort as a practical and eco-friendly step, some expressed concerns over whether work-from-home arrangements would affect coordination and public service delivery in certain departments.
Mizoram has previously promoted environmentally conscious policies and sustainable governance measures. The latest decision is being seen as part of the government’s broader attempt to balance administrative efficiency with resource conservation and financial management.
