DMK president M K Stalin has launched a sharp attack on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and his government following the arrest of his son and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin. Stalin described the ruling administration as an “inept” government and accused it of behaving like a “joker cabinet”. He alleged that Udhayanidhi’s arrest was a politically motivated move aimed at diverting public attention from the government’s failures.

The controversy erupted after Udhayanidhi was taken into custody by Tamil Nadu Police in connection with remarks he allegedly made during a protest linked to the Cauvery water dispute. He was subsequently questioned by police and released after the Madras High Court directed that he be freed following the completion of questioning.

Stalin alleged that the government was using the police action to suppress political opposition. Calling the move “fascist”, he claimed that the ruling side was attempting to create a political distraction rather than address issues confronting the state.

The attack also brought Vijay, the chief minister and head of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), directly into the centre of the political controversy. Stalin questioned the functioning of the new government and criticised Vijay's leadership, accusing the administration of lacking experience and competence.

Udhayanidhi himself has also stepped up his criticism of the chief minister after his release. He called Vijay a “dummy CM” and alleged that his detention was intended to divert attention from the Cauvery water issue. He also defended his controversial remarks, saying that he had not intended to disrespect women.

The latest confrontation comes at a politically sensitive time, with the Tamil Nadu Assembly session underway. DMK leaders have alleged that the police action against Udhayanidhi was designed to prevent him from attending the Budget session and raising questions against the government.

The ruling side, however, has rejected the allegations of political motivation. The government had told the Madras High Court that it did not intend to seek Udhayanidhi’s remand and that he would be released after questioning.

The dispute has now developed into a broader political battle between the DMK and the newly formed TVK government. With both sides escalating their rhetoric, Udhayanidhi’s arrest and subsequent release are likely to remain major issues in Tamil Nadu politics in the days ahead.
