Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is witnessing growing support “from all sections of society” in West Bengal, as the high-stakes Assembly election campaign intensifies. His remarks come shortly after the first phase of polling, which recorded a strong voter turnout and heightened political momentum in the state.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Modi said the increasing backing for the BJP reflects a broader desire for political change in Bengal. He pointed to the enthusiastic participation of voters, particularly youth and women, as a clear signal that people are seeking an alternative to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The Prime Minister also described the current political mood as a “wave of change,” claiming that support for the BJP is cutting across social, economic and regional lines. He argued that this shift is driven by dissatisfaction with the existing state government and a growing aspiration for development and governance reforms.
In a strongly worded attack, Modi accused the TMC administration of undermining democratic institutions, alleging that the “temple of democracy” has been weakened under its rule. He further warned that those involved in political violence would face consequences after the election results, signaling a tough stance if the BJP comes to power.
The BJP leadership has linked the high voter turnout to its expanding support base. Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the large participation in the first phase indicates a strong pro-BJP trend and could translate into significant electoral gains.
However, the TMC has dismissed these claims, accusing the Prime Minister of exaggerating public support and labeling his campaign efforts as largely symbolic. The party has also questioned the intent behind his visits and outreach activities in the state, calling them politically motivated.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election is being closely watched as a crucial political battle, not only for control of the state but also as a test of the BJP’s ability to expand its footprint beyond its traditional strongholds.
With multiple phases of polling still remaining, Modi’s assertion of broad-based support sets the tone for an increasingly intense contest between the BJP and the TMC, with both sides projecting confidence of victory.
