New Delhi: Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has accused the “Modi-Shah duo” of being accountable for the death of a NEET aspirant who died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Sikar following the controversy over the NEET-UG examination paper leak.
According to multiple reports, Rahul Gandhi met the bereaved family of the student at an NSUI office on Wednesday and also interacted with other NEET aspirants. The deceased student had reportedly appeared for the NEET-UG 2026 examination, which was later cancelled amid allegations of a paper leak and irregularities in the conduct of the exam.
During the meeting, Gandhi described the incident as a reflection of what he called a “broken, corrupt system” and said the pressure and uncertainty faced by students across the country had reached alarming levels. He expressed solidarity with the family and said their pain could not be expressed in words.
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the student’s death was not an isolated tragedy but the result of systemic failure in India’s examination process. He also directly held Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah accountable, stating that those responsible for the system must answer to the grieving family.
He further argued that millions of students preparing for competitive examinations are living under intense stress due to recurring allegations of irregularities and paper leaks. Gandhi said such incidents damage trust in public examinations and destroy the aspirations of young candidates.
The NEET-UG 2026 examination, conducted on May 3, was cancelled after reports of a paper leak surfaced, triggering nationwide concern and political debate. The National Testing Agency has faced criticism over exam security, while the government has ordered further investigations into the matter.
The controversy has also led to political confrontation between the opposition and the central government, with Congress leaders demanding stronger accountability and reforms in the examination system.
The incident has once again brought attention to the mental health pressure faced by competitive exam aspirants in India, with opposition leaders calling for urgent reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
