Nagaland Police destroyed narcotics worth more than Rs 36 crore in a major anti-drug operation aimed at curbing the illegal drug trade in the state, officials said on Sunday.
The destroyed substances included heroin, methamphetamine tablets, cannabis and other banned narcotic materials seized during multiple operations conducted across different districts over the past several months. Police officials said the drugs were confiscated in cases linked to interstate and cross-border trafficking networks.
The destruction process was carried out under strict security and legal supervision in the presence of senior police officers, magistrates and representatives from concerned departments. Authorities stated that all procedures were conducted according to court guidelines and provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Officials said the operation reflects the state government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking routes passing through the Northeast. Nagaland shares proximity with international borders and has often been identified as a transit region for narcotics smuggled from neighbouring countries into different parts of India.
Senior police officers said several arrests had been made in connection with the seized drugs and investigations are continuing to identify larger trafficking syndicates and financial networks involved in the trade. Authorities also indicated that surveillance along highways and vulnerable border points has been strengthened.
Apart from enforcement action, police and social organisations have also been conducting awareness campaigns against substance abuse, especially among young people. Officials expressed concern over the growing spread of synthetic drugs in parts of the Northeast and called for stronger coordination between states and central agencies.
The destruction of seized narcotics is considered an important legal and administrative step to ensure that confiscated drugs do not re-enter illegal circulation. Authorities said detailed records and video documentation of the process were maintained for transparency.
Nagaland Police reaffirmed their commitment to continuing anti-drug operations and urged citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious trafficking activities and illegal drug networks operating in the region.
