Nagpur: Police in Nagpur have arrested the president of a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) on serious charges including alleged sexual abuse of young women, religious coercion, defamation, and cyberstalking. The arrest has triggered widespread concern and debate in the city, particularly over the alleged misuse of trust and institutional position.
According to police officials, the accused had been associated with the NGO for several years and was reportedly involved in social welfare activities that brought him into contact with vulnerable groups, including young women and students. Investigators allege that he used his position of authority to exploit and manipulate victims over a period of time.
The complaint was filed after multiple individuals came forward with similar allegations, prompting authorities to initiate a detailed investigation. Police stated that the accused is alleged to have engaged in coercive behaviour, including psychological pressure and intimidation tactics, which extended to online harassment and cyberstalking in certain cases.
Officials also said that allegations of defamation and attempts to damage the reputation of complainants are part of the ongoing investigation. The cybercrime unit has been involved in examining digital evidence, including messages and social media activity, to establish the pattern of alleged offences.
The accused was taken into custody following questioning and was produced before a local court, which sent him to police custody for further interrogation. Authorities are now working to identify whether more individuals may have been affected.
Senior police officers said that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and the involvement of a public-facing organisation. They also assured that all necessary steps are being taken to protect the privacy and safety of complainants and witnesses.
The NGO in question has not yet issued a detailed public statement, but sources indicate that internal scrutiny has begun within the organisation following the arrest of its head.
Meanwhile, local activists and women’s rights groups have raised concerns about accountability mechanisms within NGOs and the need for stronger safeguards to prevent abuse of trust in social service institutions.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have indicated that further action will depend on the findings of digital forensics and witness statements. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward.
