NDA MPs on Tuesday staged a protest march towards Parliament, accusing the Opposition of blocking a debate on the ongoing student protests and disrupting the Monsoon Session. The demonstration came amid a growing political confrontation over the police action against job aspirants in Jharkhand.
The MPs carried placards targeting Opposition leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and raised slogans over the alleged refusal to allow Parliament to discuss the student protests.
The latest protest followed Monday’s tense developments in Ranchi, where thousands of job aspirants marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Police used force to disperse the protesters after the situation escalated near the Assembly. The incident has since become a major political issue at the national level.
The BJP-led NDA has accused the Opposition of creating a logjam in Parliament while simultaneously demanding that the government respond to the concerns of protesting students. NDA MPs argued that the issue should be discussed inside Parliament rather than being used to disrupt proceedings.
The Opposition, however, has criticised the government over the police action in Jharkhand and demanded accountability. Congress leaders have maintained that students protesting over their employment prospects should be heard and that their concerns require a proper discussion in Parliament.
The competing protests also highlighted the deepening divide between the government and Opposition during the Monsoon Session. On Tuesday, NDA and Opposition MPs held separate demonstrations within the Parliament complex, with both sides carrying placards and raising slogans. Security personnel were deployed between the two groups to prevent the confrontation from escalating.
The NDA's march was therefore not only a protest against the Opposition's parliamentary strategy but also an attempt to put political pressure on Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders over their position on the student agitation. BJP leaders have argued that the Opposition cannot demand action on the issue while allegedly preventing a debate on it in the House.
Meanwhile, the student protests in Jharkhand continue to fuel political tensions. The controversy has brought recruitment examinations, alleged irregularities and the treatment of young protesters into the centre of the Parliament debate.
With both sides refusing to back down, the student protest issue is expected to remain a major flashpoint in the ongoing Monsoon Session. The confrontation outside and inside Parliament also reflects the widening political battle over how the grievances of job aspirants should be addressed.
