Kolkata: Newly elected members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly took oath on Wednesday in a formal ceremony held at the Assembly, marking the beginning of a new legislative term in the state.
Among those sworn in was Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who took oath as an MLA along with several senior leaders and first-time legislators. The ceremony was administered by Pro-tem Speaker Tapas Roy, who supervised the proceedings in accordance with constitutional norms.
The oath-taking process was conducted in phases to ensure smooth functioning of the House, given the large number of elected representatives. MLAs from different regions of the state were called in batches to complete the formalities over the scheduled sessions.
Suvendu Adhikari’s presence in the Assembly drew significant attention as it marked the formal commencement of his role as Chief Minister within the legislative framework. He is expected to outline the government’s priorities in the coming sessions, including administrative reforms and development-focused policies.
Senior leaders from the ruling party and allied groups also took oath during the ceremony. Several newly elected legislators expressed commitment to representing their constituencies and participating actively in legislative debates.
The Assembly Secretariat confirmed that all elected members were required to submit valid election certificates and identity documents before taking oath, in line with established procedure.
The session also comes at a politically significant time, with the new government preparing to present its agenda in the House and face its first major legislative challenges. Political observers say the composition of the new Assembly will play a crucial role in shaping policy decisions in the coming months.
With the completion of the oath-taking ceremony, the West Bengal Assembly is set to proceed with the election of the Speaker and other procedural steps that will formally establish the functioning of the new House.
