The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sought 14 days of custody for former Trinamool Congress MLA Saokat Molla in connection with the Bhangar blast case in West Bengal. Molla was arrested on Friday night following a series of searches and raids conducted by the central agency as part of its ongoing probe into the pre-election explosion in Bhangar.
According to the NIA, Molla is a “key conspirator” in the case and allegedly played a significant role in the events surrounding the blast. Investigators told the court that custodial interrogation is necessary to uncover the wider conspiracy, identify other accused persons, and gather additional evidence linked to the incident.
The case relates to a deadly explosion that took place in Bamunia village of Bhangar ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Investigators allege that crude bombs were being manufactured when the explosion occurred, resulting in the death of one person. The NIA later took over the investigation from local police due to the seriousness of the case.
Before Molla's arrest, NIA teams had conducted searches at his residence and other properties linked to him and his family. Investigators reportedly examined documents, electronic devices, and questioned several individuals as part of the probe.
The arrest has triggered a political storm in West Bengal, with opposition parties demanding strict action while supporters of Molla have questioned the allegations against him. The NIA, however, maintains that its investigation is based on evidence gathered during the course of the probe.
The court is expected to decide on the NIA's request for 14-day custody after hearing arguments from both the investigating agency and the defense. The outcome will determine the next phase of the investigation into one of the state's most high-profile blast cases.
