Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday undertook an early-morning tour of Srinagar to review the progress of several ongoing development projects across the city. The inspection began at around 6:30 am and covered key areas from Downtown and Shehar-e-Khaas to the newer parts of the city.
Speaking during the tour, Abdullah stressed that Srinagar holds a special place in the identity of Jammu and Kashmir and requires sustained attention to preserve its character while improving infrastructure and public services.
“Srinagar is an important part of Jammu and Kashmir’s identity,” the Chief Minister said, pointing out that Jammu and Kashmir is the only region in the country with two capitals—Srinagar in summer and Jammu in winter. He said both cities require focused development and better civic infrastructure.
During the extensive tour, Abdullah and senior officials reviewed the status of around 10 to 12 projects covering different parts of Srinagar. According to the Chief Minister, most of the works are progressing satisfactorily, while a few projects requie additional intervention to accelerate their implementation.
“Most of the projects are progressing satisfactorily, while one or two need a little push, which we will provide,” Abdullah said.
The inspection comes amid the administration’s broader focus on improving urban infrastructure in Srinagar. Earlier this year, the Srinagar Development Authority reviewed several major initiatives, including housing projects, urban infrastructure, land management and the proposed satellite township at Rakhi Gund Aksha in Bemina. The government has also stressed the need for planned urban expansion, improved parking facilities and better public amenities.
The Chief Minister’s city tour also coincided with the first official visit to Jammu and Kashmir by US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor. Gor is scheduled to meet Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha during his stay in Srinagar. He is expected to spend the night in the Valley before travelling to Ladakh on Thursday.
Gor assumed charge as US Ambassador to India earlier this year, making his Kashmir visit an important diplomatic engagement. His additional responsibility as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia has added significance to the visit amid evolving regional developments.
For the J&K administration, however, Wednesday’s focus remained firmly on Srinagar’s development, with Abdullah personally reviewing projects and emphasising the need to ensure that ongoing works are completed efficiently and deliver visible benefits to residents.
