Opposition MPs are set to stage a protest at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex on Tuesday, targeting the government over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the ongoing student protests and allegations surrounding donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The protest is scheduled for 10.30 am.
The demonstration comes amid a continuing deadlock in Parliament, with the Opposition demanding that the government respond to several issues linked to the recent student agitation. Opposition parties have been particularly critical of the police action against protesting students and have sought answers from Amit Shah over the government’s handling of the situation.
The Opposition has also kept the alleged irregularities involving donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya at the centre of its protests. Leaders have demanded a discussion and greater transparency over the allegations, insisting that the issue concerns the faith and money of devotees.
The government, meanwhile, has attempted to break the parliamentary impasse by offering Amit Shah an opportunity to make a statement on the student protests. However, the Opposition has refused to accept the offer without addressing its other demands. Reports say the Opposition is seeking, among other things, an explanation from Shah over the alleged use of force against protesters and a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Ram Temple donation allegations.
The latest protest is expected to bring Opposition parties together at the Parliament complex as they step up pressure on the Centre. The Makar Dwar demonstration also follows earlier protests by Opposition MPs over the Ram Temple donation controversy and the treatment of student protesters.
The donation controversy has already led to an investigation in Uttar Pradesh. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had earlier said it was committed to a fair inquiry into allegations concerning donations and assured devotees that donated valuables were properly accounted for.
With the Opposition continuing to raise both issues and the government insisting on the need for Parliament to function, the confrontation is likely to intensify during the ongoing Monsoon Session. The competing demands have added another flashpoint to an already tense political atmosphere in Parliament.
