A major tragedy was averted on Monday after a passenger bus caught fire in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district, with all over two dozen passengers managing to escape safely before the flames spread, officials said.

The incident occurred on a highway stretch near Jhansi when the private bus, en route to a nearby city, suddenly began emitting smoke from its rear portion. Within minutes, the situation escalated as flames engulfed the vehicle, prompting panic among passengers.

According to preliminary reports from local authorities, the driver noticed the smoke and immediately stopped the bus on the roadside. His quick response is believed to have played a crucial role in preventing casualties. Passengers were alerted and asked to evacuate immediately.

Eyewitnesses said that passengers rushed out of the bus carrying limited belongings as the fire intensified. Within a short span, the entire vehicle was engulfed, reducing it to a burnt shell. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported among the passengers, who numbered more than twenty.

Fire and emergency services were soon alerted and a team reached the spot to douse the flames. By the time firefighters controlled the blaze, the bus had already suffered extensive damage. Cooling operations were carried out to ensure the fire did not reignite.

Officials are now investigating the exact cause of the fire. While the initial suspicion points toward a possible short circuit in the engine or electrical system, authorities have said that a detailed technical inspection will be conducted before confirming the reason.

Police have also recorded statements from the driver and passengers to reconstruct the sequence of events. The bus operator is being questioned regarding maintenance records and safety compliance.

Local administration officials praised the swift evacuation and the driver’s alertness, stating that timely action helped avoid a potential disaster. They also reiterated the importance of regular vehicle inspections, especially for long-distance passenger buses operating in high-temperature conditions.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety standards and fire preparedness in public transport vehicles. Experts note that many buses lack adequate fire suppression systems, making quick evacuation the only effective safety measure in emergencies.

Passengers, though shaken, were later assisted by local authorities and arranged to continue their journey through alternate transport.

The Jhansi bus fire adds to a series of recent vehicular fire incidents reported across the region, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in the transport sector.
