New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said the deadlock in Parliament would continue until Union Home Minister Amit Shah makes a statement over allegations of police excesses against students.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, Priyanka said the Opposition was seeking an explanation from the Home Minister on the alleged police action. “I think the deadlock in Parliament will continue till the Union Home Minister gives a statement,” she said.
The standoff comes with only four days remaining in the Monsoon Session, which began on July 20. Repeated protests by Opposition MPs have disrupted proceedings, leaving several important legislative measures uncertain.
Among the key issues are proposed legislation concerning women’s reservation, delimitation and amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). These measures have become a major point of contention between the government and Opposition parties.
The Congress and several of its allies have strongly opposed the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal has described the proposed legislation as “anti-people” and alleged that it could adversely affect minorities and NGOs. He has warned that the Opposition would resist any attempt to pass the bill without adequate discussion.
The government, meanwhile, has continued its efforts to move legislative business forward. However, the continuing confrontation has meant that much of the session has been marked by adjournments and protests rather than sustained parliamentary debate.
The Monsoon Session has so far seen limited legislative activity. The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, was passed by both Houses following debate, while several other bills were passed amid Opposition protests and disruptions.
The Congress has also issued a whip directing its MPs in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to remain present on August 10, 11 and 12, describing the remaining days as particularly important. The party has also asked its INDIA bloc allies to ensure that their MPs attend the proceedings.
With the session nearing its conclusion, the Opposition's demand for a statement from Amit Shah has emerged as a central obstacle to normal parliamentary functioning. Unless the government and Opposition reach an understanding, further disruptions are likely during the remaining days of the session.
