Parliament is set for an important day in the Monsoon Session as the Union Government plans to introduce and seek passage of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation aims to tighten the legal framework against paper leaks and examination malpractices, following the nationwide controversy over the NEET examination. The Bill proposes stricter penalties, greater accountability for third-party service providers, and faster investigation and trial mechanisms.
The Lok Sabha will also consider the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges to help reduce the growing backlog of pending cases. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to move the Bill for consideration and passage.
In the Rajya Sabha, the government has listed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for discussion. The proposed legislation seeks to amend existing laws relating to national symbols and includes provisions concerning disruptions during the singing of Vande Mataram. The Bill is expected to generate significant debate in the Upper House.
The legislative agenda comes amid continued Opposition protests over the alleged police action against NEET protesters, with several parties submitting adjournment notices demanding an immediate discussion. Despite the possibility of disruptions, the government has urged all Members of Parliament to participate constructively in the debate on the anti-paper leak legislation, describing it as a crucial reform to restore confidence in India's public examination system.
