Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay in New Delhi on Thursday, in a significant political meeting that focused on development issues, welfare schemes, and Centre–State coordination, according to official sources.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence, is being described as cordial and constructive. Both leaders reportedly discussed a wide range of topics including infrastructure expansion in Tamil Nadu, industrial investment opportunities, railway projects, and welfare schemes aimed at improving livelihoods in rural and urban areas of the state.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Chief Minister Vijay presented a detailed overview of ongoing state government initiatives, particularly focusing on job creation, digital governance, and improvements in the education and health sectors. He also sought additional central assistance for key infrastructure projects, including highway expansion and coastal development programmes.
Prime Minister Modi, on his part, emphasized the importance of cooperative federalism and assured continued support from the Centre for Tamil Nadu’s growth. He reportedly appreciated the state’s progress in several sectors, particularly its strong industrial base and contribution to India’s manufacturing and export economy.
The meeting also touched upon issues related to disaster preparedness, especially in view of Tamil Nadu’s vulnerability to cyclones and flooding. Both leaders discussed strengthening early warning systems and improving relief response mechanisms.
Political observers say the meeting carries significance beyond administrative discussions, as it comes at a time when national and regional political alignments are evolving ahead of upcoming elections. While both sides maintained that the meeting was focused on governance, it has naturally drawn political attention given the prominence of both leaders.
Sources indicated that Chief Minister Vijay also raised concerns about pending central funds and requested faster clearance for certain state development proposals. The Prime Minister assured that these matters would be examined promptly through the relevant ministries.
Following the meeting, no joint press conference was held, but officials described the atmosphere as positive and productive. A formal statement from the Prime Minister’s Office is expected to outline the key outcomes of the discussions.
This meeting is being seen as an important step in strengthening Centre–State relations between the Union government and Tamil Nadu, with both sides expressing willingness to continue dialogue on development priorities and policy coordination in the coming months.
