Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Slovakia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), during his historic visit to Bratislava on Monday. The prestigious award was presented by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in recognition of Modi’s contribution to strengthening international relations and deepening India’s engagement with Slovakia. The honour marks the 33rd international award received by the Indian Prime Minister from a foreign nation.
Accepting the award, Modi dedicated it to the people of India and described it as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two countries. He expressed gratitude to the Slovak government and citizens, stating that the recognition reflected the trust and goodwill shared by India and Slovakia.
The award ceremony came during a landmark visit that has significantly elevated bilateral relations. Modi held extensive discussions with Slovak President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, focusing on trade, technology, defence, innovation, and people-to-people ties. The leaders agreed to elevate India-Slovakia relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, a major diplomatic milestone that is expected to expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
Addressing the media after the talks, Modi said India and Slovakia share “trust, priorities, and a common future.” He highlighted the vast untapped potential between the two nations and stressed the importance of closer cooperation between India and Central Europe. The Prime Minister noted that growing economic and strategic engagement would create new opportunities for businesses, researchers, and citizens of both countries.
Several agreements were signed during the visit, including initiatives aimed at enhancing defence cooperation, digital technology collaboration, migration management, and counter-terrorism coordination. Both sides also emphasized the need for reforms in global institutions and pledged to work together on regional and international issues.
Modi’s visit is particularly significant as it marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. The trip was welcomed warmly by Slovak citizens, with cultural performances and traditional ceremonies showcasing the growing goodwill between the two nations.
The visit concludes with both countries expressing confidence that the newly established Comprehensive Partnership will open a new chapter in India-Slovakia relations and strengthen cooperation in the years ahead.
