Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth around ₹18,778 crore in South Gujarat, describing Surat as a model city for cleanliness, sustainable development, and green energy. The projects span key sectors including highways, industrial infrastructure, urban development, and energy, with the aim of accelerating economic growth across the region.
Addressing a large gathering in Surat on World Environment Day, Modi said the city has emerged as a symbol of modern urban planning and public participation. He praised Surat’s achievements in sanitation, environmental conservation, and its growing adoption of clean energy technologies. According to the Prime Minister, the city demonstrates how rapid economic expansion can go hand in hand with environmental responsibility.
A major portion of the investment is focused on improving transportation and connectivity. Key infrastructure works include highway and expressway projects designed to strengthen links between Gujarat’s industrial centers and major markets. These initiatives are expected to reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency, and support trade and manufacturing activities across South Gujarat.
The development package also includes projects related to industrial growth, power infrastructure, and urban facilities. Officials believe the investments will generate employment opportunities, attract fresh investments, and enhance the quality of public services in the region. South Gujarat, already one of the country’s most important industrial belts, is expected to benefit significantly from the upgraded infrastructure.
During his speech, Modi emphasized the importance of energy security and a faster transition towards renewable energy. Referring to global disruptions caused by the pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and energy crises, he said India must reduce dependence on external energy sources and strengthen its clean energy ecosystem. He highlighted green growth as a key pillar of India’s long-term development strategy.
The Prime Minister also noted that the event itself was organized using eco-friendly practices, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainability. City authorities carried out extensive plantation and beautification drives ahead of the visit, reinforcing Surat’s reputation as one of India’s cleanest and most environmentally conscious cities.
The ₹18,778 crore development push is being viewed as one of the largest infrastructure packages announced for South Gujarat in recent years, underlining the region’s importance in India’s economic and industrial future.
