Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day visit to West Bengal on June 20, during which he is set to launch and inaugurate a series of major development projects aimed at strengthening agriculture, railways, fisheries, rural connectivity, and livestock infrastructure across the state. The visit is being seen as one of the most significant development-focused engagements in Bengal this year.
A major highlight of the visit will be the release of the 23rd installment of the PM-KISAN scheme. Under the initiative, more than ₹18,880 crore will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of over 9.44 crore farmers across the country. In West Bengal alone, over 45 lakh farmers are expected to receive more than ₹900 crore, providing a substantial boost to the agricultural sector.
The Prime Minister will also launch several key agricultural schemes in the state, including the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), AgriStack under the Digital Agriculture Mission, the National Mission on Natural Farming, and the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. These initiatives are aimed at improving crop insurance coverage, expanding digital services for farmers, promoting sustainable farming practices, and enhancing agricultural productivity in rural areas.
Under PMFBY, nearly 50 lakh farmers in West Bengal are expected to receive crop insurance coverage during 2026-27. The National Mission on Natural Farming will support the creation of hundreds of natural farming clusters across the state, encouraging eco-friendly agricultural practices. Meanwhile, the Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana will focus on the districts of Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar, and Jhargram to improve irrigation, crop diversification, and rural infrastructure.
In addition to agriculture, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the modernized fishing harbour at Fraserganj in South 24 Parganas and a modern fish market at Sainthia in Birbhum. These projects are expected to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and create better marketing opportunities for fish producers and traders. He will also inaugurate Eastern India’s first Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Goat Semen Bank at Haringhata in Nadia district to boost livestock productivity and scientific breeding.
The visit will also feature railway and connectivity projects worth around ₹590 crore. These include the inauguration of the Sankrail–Santragachi Link Line in Howrah, the foundation stone laying for a new 300-bed divisional railway hospital in Howrah, and a road overbridge project in Purba Medinipur. Additionally, 49 rural road projects developed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana will be inaugurated, improving connectivity across several districts of West Bengal.
On June 21, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road, where thousands are expected to join the nationwide event under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
