A probe has been ordered in Bengaluru after a video showing a distressed man protesting against a traffic halt for a VIP convoy went viral on social media. The incident took place on Old Airport Road on Sunday and has reignited a nationwide debate over VIP movement and public inconvenience.
According to police officials, the man was travelling with his pregnant wife when traffic was allegedly stopped to facilitate the movement of Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s convoy. The road, already facing heavy congestion due to ongoing underpass construction work, reportedly witnessed a massive traffic jam, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. Several social media posts claimed vehicles were halted for nearly 30 minutes, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact duration.
Frustrated by the delay and concerned about his wife’s condition, the man stepped out of his vehicle and sat down in the middle of the road in front of traffic police officers. In videos widely shared online, he can be heard questioning why ordinary citizens were being forced to suffer for VIP movement while his pregnant wife remained stuck in traffic. The dramatic protest quickly drew attention from fellow commuters and passersby, many of whom recorded the incident on their phones.
The footage triggered widespread criticism of what many described as “VIP culture.” Social media users expressed anger over the inconvenience caused to commuters, particularly in situations involving medical emergencies. Several users argued that public safety and emergency needs should not be compromised for the movement of dignitaries.
Prominent industrialist and IT veteran T V Mohandas Pai also reacted to the incident, criticizing VIP traffic protocols and urging authorities to review existing arrangements. He called for greater respect toward citizens and questioned prolonged traffic stoppages during high-profile movements.
Following the public outrage, Bengaluru Traffic Police confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated. Officials said they are verifying the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether traffic was halted specifically for the Governor’s convoy and whether proper traffic management procedures were followed. CCTV footage and other evidence are expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
The episode has once again highlighted Bengaluru’s chronic traffic problems and raised questions about balancing security requirements for VIPs with the daily needs and emergencies faced by ordinary citizens. As the inquiry continues, many residents are demanding reforms to ensure that emergency situations are not adversely affected by future VIP movements.
