Tension gripped parts of Kolkata after a protest against an anti-encroachment demolition drive turned violent, leaving at least three police personnel injured during clashes between protesters and security forces.
The unrest broke out when civic authorities, accompanied by police, launched a demolition operation to remove alleged illegal structures from the area. Residents and local protesters gathered at the spot and opposed the drive, claiming the demolitions were being carried out without proper rehabilitation arrangements.
As the situation escalated, protesters allegedly hurled stones and blocked roads, leading to a confrontation with police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. Police later used force to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
Officials said three policemen sustained injuries during the violence and received medical treatment. Several police vehicles and barricades were also reportedly damaged during the clashes.
The demolition drive was part of an ongoing anti-encroachment operation by civic authorities aimed at clearing unauthorised constructions and improving public infrastructure in the area. However, local residents alleged that many families were being displaced without adequate notice or alternative arrangements.
Heavy police deployment was made in and around the affected locality following the incident to prevent further violence. Senior administrative and police officials visited the spot to monitor the situation and oversee security arrangements.
Political reactions also emerged after the clashes, with opposition parties criticising the administration over the handling of the demolition exercise, while authorities defended the action as necessary for public interest and urban development.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated, and officials said strict action would be taken against those involved in the violence and attacks on police personnel.
