Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that stricter punishment alone cannot solve the recurring problem of examination paper leaks, stressing that the government must focus equally on preventive measures to safeguard the future of students.

His remarks come amid a nationwide debate over examination reforms after the Centre announced the setting up of fast-track courts to ensure speedy trials and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leak cases. The government said the move is aimed at protecting the interests of students and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice quickly.

Reacting to the announcement, Tharoor argued that while punishment is necessary to deter offenders, it addresses the issue only after the damage has already been done. He said the priority should be to prevent leaks from occurring in the first place through stronger security protocols, improved monitoring, technological safeguards, and greater accountability within examination authorities. According to him, a robust and transparent examination system is essential to restore students' confidence.

The Congress leader also expressed concern over the impact of repeated paper leaks on millions of aspirants who spend years preparing for competitive examinations. He said recurring irregularities have eroded trust in the examination process and left students feeling betrayed by the system.

The Centre has maintained that it is committed to protecting students' interests and has announced a series of measures, including fast-track courts and additional actions against paper leak networks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently stated that those attempting to jeopardise the future of the country's youth would not be spared and that the government is taking decisive steps to curb such offences.

The issue has become a major political flashpoint, with the Opposition demanding stronger institutional reforms and greater accountability, while the government insists that its legal and administrative measures will strengthen the integrity of the examination system. As the debate continues, both sides agree on one point the need to protect the aspirations of millions of students whose careers depend on fair and transparent examinations.
