Punjab Police on Thursday busted a major drug and illegal arms smuggling module with the arrest of two persons and the recovery of more than 5.5 kilograms of heroin, four pistols and 10 live cartridges. The operation was carried out by the Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police in Amritsar.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were allegedly linked to cross-border smugglers and had received consignments of narcotics and weapons for further distribution across Punjab.
According to police officials, the recovered weapons included sophisticated pistols believed to have been smuggled into India through illegal cross-border networks. Authorities suspect that the module was part of a larger narco-terror and arms trafficking racket operating in border districts of Punjab.
Police have registered a case in Amritsar under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act. Investigators are now trying to establish the forward and backward linkages of the network and identify other associates involved in the smuggling operation.
The latest seizure comes amid Punjab Police’s intensified anti-drug campaign, “Yudh Nashian Virudh,” aimed at dismantling narcotics and illegal arms networks across the state. In recent months, multiple operations have led to the recovery of large quantities of heroin, foreign-made pistols and ammunition linked to cross-border smuggling syndicates.
Officials said border districts such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Fazilka and Ferozepur remain highly vulnerable to drug and arms smuggling activities due to their proximity to the India-Pakistan border. Police and border security agencies have increased surveillance, intelligence-sharing and naka checking to curb such activities.
Punjab Police officials reiterated that investigations are continuing and more arrests are likely in connection with the module.
