Punjab Police on Monday carried out raids at the residence of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in Amritsar in connection with the alleged attack on Majitha police station, marking a major escalation in the ongoing investigation.
According to police officials, multiple teams reached Majithia’s house as part of coordinated searches linked to an FIR registered in the case. The action is part of a wider operation aimed at arresting individuals accused of being involved in an alleged attempt to storm the police station and free a detainee from custody.
Officials said the case relates to an incident in which a group of around 50–60 people allegedly gathered outside Majitha police station and forcibly entered the premises. The mob is accused of creating chaos inside the station, damaging official records, and trying to free a detainee named Jobanpreet who had been arrested earlier.
Police have claimed that Majithia was among those allegedly linked to the gathering, and that the incident appeared to be a pre-planned attempt to disrupt law enforcement operations. Based on the FIR, special teams have been formed to identify and arrest all accused persons involved in the case.
Sources said the raids were conducted simultaneously at multiple locations, including properties connected to the SAD leader. However, Majithia was not present at his residence when police teams arrived, and no arrest was made during the operation.
The development has triggered a strong political reaction, with the Shiromani Akali Dal terming the police action as “political vendetta.” Party leaders alleged that the ruling government was targeting opposition leaders using investigative agencies.
Meanwhile, police officials maintained that the action is strictly based on evidence collected in the case and forms part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged attack on a government facility and interference in police duties.
Security has been tightened in and around sensitive areas in Amritsar and Majitha as the probe continues. Officials have indicated that more arrests are likely as investigations progress and teams trace the movement of those named in the FIR.
The case remains under active investigation, and authorities have not ruled out further raids or questioning in the coming days.
