Amritsar: Punjab Police on Sunday claimed to have busted a cross-border drug smuggling module and recovered 28 kilograms of heroin in a major anti-narcotics operation. Four people have been arrested in connection with the case, officials said.
According to senior police officers, the seizure was made following specific intelligence inputs about a narcotics network operating across the India–Pakistan border. The module was allegedly involved in smuggling heroin consignments into Punjab and distributing them further into other states.
Police said the operation was carried out in multiple phases, with coordinated raids at suspected locations leading to the arrest of the accused persons. The recovered heroin is believed to have been recently smuggled into Indian territory through a border route in Punjab.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the arrested individuals were part of a wider drug trafficking syndicate with cross-border links. Officials said efforts are underway to identify the backward and forward linkages of the network, including possible handlers operating from outside the country.
A senior police official said the recovery of such a large quantity of heroin highlights continued attempts by drug cartels to exploit Punjab’s proximity to the international border. He added that surveillance has been intensified along sensitive border areas to prevent further smuggling attempts.
The accused are currently being interrogated, and police are also examining mobile phones and other digital evidence to trace communication with their handlers. Authorities have not ruled out more arrests in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
Punjab has been battling a long-standing drug menace, and law enforcement agencies have intensified operations targeting both street-level peddlers and large-scale trafficking networks. Officials said such seizures are part of an ongoing crackdown aimed at dismantling the supply chain.
Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
