Long queues of voters were seen across Asansol as Phase 1 polling of the West Bengal Assembly elections began on Thursday, reflecting strong early enthusiasm among the electorate. From the early hours, men and women lined up outside polling booths, patiently waiting to exercise their democratic rights amid tight security arrangements.
At several booths in Asansol, first-time voters and elderly citizens were also spotted in significant numbers, highlighting the inclusive nature of the electoral process. Election officials reported smooth functioning of EVMs, while central forces remained deployed to ensure peaceful voting in sensitive areas.
Amid the ongoing polling, R. N. Ravi appealed to citizens, especially women and young voters, to actively participate in the electoral process. Calling elections a “sacred festival of democracy,” he urged people not to miss the opportunity to shape the future through their vote.
His message resonated strongly as women voters turned out in large numbers at multiple polling stations, many of them forming separate queues as per arrangements. Youth participation was also visible, with college students and first-time voters expressing excitement about casting their vote.
Authorities have made extensive arrangements, including security deployment, voter assistance booths, and monitoring systems, to ensure a free and fair election. Despite isolated reports of minor issues, the overall polling process in the region remained orderly during the initial hours.
The first phase of polling is being closely watched as it sets the tone for the remaining phases of the election. Political parties have intensified their outreach, while voters appear determined to make their voices heard.
As the day progresses, the steady turnout in Asansol signals a vibrant democratic spirit, with citizens embracing their role in shaping the state’s political future.
