Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has been appointed chairman of the Rajya Sabha’s Committee on Petitions following the reconstitution of the parliamentary panel by Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan.
The appointment comes weeks after Chadha’s switch from the Aam Aadmi Party to the Bharatiya Janata Party, a move that triggered major political debate across the country. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said the reconstituted committee came into effect from May 20.
The Committee on Petitions is an important parliamentary panel that examines petitions and grievances submitted by citizens to the Upper House and makes recommendations on matters of public importance and legislative concern.
Apart from Chadha, the newly reconstituted panel includes Harsh Mahajan, Gulam Ali, Shambhu Sharan Patel, Mayankkumar Nayak, Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha, Jebi Mather Hisham, Subhasish Khuntia, Rwngwra Narzary and Sandosh Kumar P.
Political observers view the appointment as a significant responsibility being handed to Chadha soon after his entry into the BJP. The 37-year-old politician has previously served as an MLA from Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar constituency and was also vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board before becoming a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab in 2022.
The development has sparked reactions in political circles, with supporters calling it recognition of Chadha’s parliamentary experience, while critics questioned the speed at which he was elevated after leaving the AAP.
