Rain Lashes Parts of Bengal as IMD Warns of Thunderstorm on Swearing-in Day

Heavy rainfall swept across several parts of West Bengal on Thursday, disrupting normal life in multiple districts as pre-monsoon weather activity intensified over the region. Waterlogging, reduced visibility, and traffic slowdowns were reported from urban and semi-urban areas after intense showers lashed the state intermittently through the day.

The regional forecast from the India Meteorological Department has indicated that thunderstorm activity is likely to continue over parts of the state in the coming days. Officials have warned of lightning, gusty winds, and short spells of heavy rain in isolated pockets, advising residents to remain cautious during evening and night hours.

According to weather officials, the current conditions are being influenced by moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal combined with local atmospheric instability. This combination has created favourable conditions for convective cloud formation, leading to sudden bursts of rainfall and thunderstorm development in several districts.

The timing of the forecast has also drawn attention as it coincides with a politically significant day in the state, when a swearing-in ceremony linked to a newly formed government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party is scheduled to take place, as reported by multiple sources. However, officials have clarified that such weather patterns are seasonal in nature and not unusual during this time of the year in eastern India.

District administrations have been advised to stay alert for possible disruptions, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Emergency services have also been instructed to remain on standby to respond to incidents such as tree falls, power outages, or lightning-related emergencies.

In Kolkata and surrounding regions, commuters faced difficulties due to sudden showers during peak hours, with traffic movement slowing down in several key intersections. Similar conditions were observed in parts of South and North Bengal, where brief but intense spells of rain were reported.

Meteorologists have stated that thunderstorm activity may persist intermittently over the next 24 to 48 hours, with some areas likely to experience stronger gusts of wind and isolated heavy rainfall. Citizens have been advised to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and to follow official weather updates.

As the state navigates both political developments and shifting weather conditions, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing preparedness and public safety as the priority in the coming days.
