Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has stepped down from her position as the National President of the party’s women’s wing, citing what she described as the “moral impact” of the RG Kar Medical College incident and broader concerns over the political and social environment in West Bengal.
According to reports, Ghosh Dastidar submitted her resignation from organisational responsibilities within the TMC Mahila wing, stating that recent developments, including the aftermath of the RG Kar hospital incident, had deeply affected public trust and raised serious ethical questions in public life. She emphasized the need for accountability, transparency, and restoration of confidence in institutions.
The RG Kar Medical College incident, which sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal in 2024, has continued to remain a sensitive political issue. It triggered massive protests over safety, governance, and alleged institutional failures in handling crimes against women in medical campuses. The issue has repeatedly resurfaced in political debates in the state, with opposition parties blaming the government over administrative lapses.
In her resignation note, Ghosh Dastidar reportedly mentioned that public sentiment and “moral responsibility” played a key role in her decision to step away from organisational duties. However, she has not resigned as a Member of Parliament and continues to remain active in legislative work.
Political observers say her move reflects growing internal discomfort within sections of the ruling party over handling of sensitive law-and-order issues and their political fallout. The development also comes amid ongoing discussions within the TMC over restructuring internal roles and addressing public criticism ahead of upcoming political challenges.
The TMC leadership has not yet issued an official detailed response to her resignation from the women’s wing post, though party insiders suggest it is being viewed as an internal organisational decision rather than a political break.
The RG Kar incident continues to influence West Bengal’s political narrative, with repeated calls from civil society groups and opposition leaders demanding stronger institutional reforms, especially in medical institutions and women’s safety mechanisms.
Ghosh Dastidar’s exit from the women’s wing role is expected to further fuel debate over accountability and internal differences within the party’s organisational structure.
