More than 100 residents of Sardiha village in Bihar’s Saharsa district have fallen ill with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and fever, prompting health authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of the sudden outbreak.
According to Saharsa Civil Surgeon Raj Narayan Prasad, medical treatment is currently being provided to those affected. He said that while most patients are receiving care, one or two children were reported to be in a more serious condition and were being shifted to Sadar Hospital for further treatment.
The sudden rise in cases has raised concerns among residents, with authorities now working to establish what triggered the illness. Health officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the outbreak and are expected to examine possible sources of contamination, including food and drinking water.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the cases are linked to a common food source, contaminated water or an infectious disease. The exact cause will be determined after the investigation and any relevant medical or laboratory assessments are completed.
The health department has stepped up medical assistance in the affected area as authorities monitor the condition of those who have fallen sick. The priority at present is to ensure that patients receive timely treatment and that those showing severe symptoms are referred to hospitals for specialised care.
The incident has also renewed concerns over public health and sanitation in rural areas, particularly when a large number of people develop similar symptoms within a short period. Vomiting and diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, making early medical intervention particularly important, especially for children and elderly people.
Authorities are continuing to collect information from the affected village to determine when the illnesses began, how many families have been affected and whether there is a common link between the cases.
As of Sunday, no official cause of the outbreak had been announced. Health officials said the findings of the ongoing investigation would help determine the next steps and whether additional preventive measures are required.
The administration is expected to keep the situation under close watch until the source of the illness is identified and the health condition of those affected improves. More details are awaited as the probe progresses.
