At least seven people were injured in a violent clash over a land dispute in Purnea district of Bihar, police said on Sunday.
According to officials, the confrontation broke out between two groups in a village area after an argument over ownership and use of a piece of land escalated into violence. Members of both sides allegedly attacked each other with sticks, rods and sharp weapons, creating panic in the locality.
Local residents informed police after the situation spiralled out of control. A police team later reached the area and brought the clash under control before shifting the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities said some of the injured sustained serious wounds but are currently out of danger.
Preliminary investigation suggests the dispute had been continuing for several months and tensions between the two families had intensified recently. Police officials said both groups accused each other of encroachment and illegal occupation of the disputed property.
Cases have been registered against individuals from both sides under various sections related to rioting, assault and disturbing public order. Police said statements from witnesses are being recorded and further arrests may follow after identification of those involved in the violence.
Senior officers confirmed that additional police personnel have been deployed in the village to prevent fresh tension and maintain law and order. Officials also said local administrative authorities are examining land ownership documents as part of efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully.
Land-related conflicts remain a recurring issue in several parts of Bihar, often leading to prolonged legal battles and occasional violence. Local residents in the affected area urged authorities to intervene quickly to prevent further escalation.
Police said the situation in the village is currently under control, though security arrangements will remain in place until tensions ease completely.
